Sungjooshin is a god governing a house,
called 'Sungjoo Daegahm' sometimes.
As one of Gahtakshin(Ê«÷Èãê), it presides
the other
gods in the house, in charge of the
peace and wealth of a house. The eldest
god out of Gashin(Ê«ãê) is the very Sungjoo(à÷ñ«).
It is enshrined inside the house for
the ceremony of putting up the ridge
beam, or after completing to build a
house, when a shaman
and the eldest of the family perform
a ceremony together, it is often worshiped
as divinity. The day when 'Sungjoo-gosa'
is performed
is the opening day of the house and
the birthday of Sungjoo god at the same
time.
"Shinche", which exposes the
divinity of Sungjoo, is made with Korean
paper folded into a square and clean
wood and thread tied together.
Sungjooshin is treated as if it were
Gajang(ÓÞñ«-the head) of the family. In
case that the eldest one in the family
dies, the existing body
of Sungjooshin is buried or burnt to
ashes, and a new Sungjooshin is enshrined.
On the birthdate of Sungjoo, a ceremony
is often carried out.
Such a recognition is exposed in a mythical
oral-statement from Sungjoo-puree, saying,
"Sungjoo believes in Daejoo while
Daejoo believes in Sungjoo."
Sungjooshin was enshrined no matter
what kind of a house was, such as a
tiled one or a thatched one. It existed
anywhere people's
life was still going on and no matter
what social class they belonged to.
It was because a house was in the center
of the life of all people.
That the home of the god creating such
a house was truly said to be Jebeewon
in the land of Andong, Gyungsang Province
shows how
valuable 'Eecheondong Sukbulsang' is
